Social Contagion and the Women Supporting Child Murderer Lindsay Clancy
What do you make of the women who are cheering on Lindsay Clancy at her trial for strangling her three young children to death? In this Friday's blog post, let's explore that phenomenon.
Do you think they sincerely believe Clancy is innocent because of a diagnosis of postpartum psychosis? Maybe they believe she was failed by the mental health system? Do you think these women represent a case of pro-abortion feminism gone predictably over the top? In other words, since the abortion goal posts keep moving towards the moment of birth, does the Clancy case represent the next phase, which is the right to kill your children after they're born? Are those women projecting their own mixed-up feelings about motherhood? Or are they just displaying another crazy case of social contagion?
There are more opinions, but I believe social contagion is key to what's going on here.
I have not been following this case closely. But it’s rare (even today) to hear of a mother who strangles her three young children to death. It’s as rare as the case of Susan Smith who killed her two toddler sons in 1994 by strapping them in car seats and then rolling the car into a lake where her little boys drowned to death.
What’s new today is the blatant show of support for Clancy and the total lack of concern for the children she killed. You can see in the video that they are organized, mostly dressed in some shade of pink. Interestingly, it’s a overwhelmingly white crowd of seemingly upwardly mobile feminists.
Be that as it may, this turnaround in our culture’s sense of justice is alarming. We can blame this cultic behavior on many things, but the effects of propaganda, and especially social media “influencing” are absolutely key to understanding it -- and how to avoid it. I wrote my book because it's critical today to understand the process of social contagion, and how it takes root in people. If we could understand how that process works in human relationships, we'd be more able to find our way out of this moral morass.
